Its Official- We are shooting Holodad on a Canon T2I

I have decided to not wait for the release of the Scarlet, but to film this summer with my DP's (the talented Ray Thomas) 7D, T2I, and possibly a Panasonic AG-HMC150. Why the switch? Rather than rewrite a long explanation, I will simply repost what I posted on ScarletUser.com

"Part of me cannot believe I am writing this, but here it is: I have decided to shoot HoloDad on a Canon 7D and a Canon T2I. Reason? Cost and Availability.

My DP already has the cameras, I just need to pick up some primes. Overall, its going to save the production over $4000. For a micro-budget feature of this scope, that's just too much money to ignore.

Last I heard, Scarlet is due out in summer, and we are shooting in July. That is just cutting it too close. This way, we can test, test, test to our hearts content and not have to reschedule the shoot or do some last minute nail biting when they finally start shipping.

I still plan on buying a Scarlet, just not for this movie. I plan on updating the blog more often, and I'll continue to post here about the movie's progress.

Funny thing is, the anticipation of Scarlet had a huge influence on me getting my butt in gear and writing the screenplay, and tackling the hundreds of other little details that come with making a feature, so I still feel more at home here than any of the other filmmaking forums.

Wish me luck!

Luke"

So there it is. EDIT> Thanks to Jason for posting his own T2I Movie that starts filming before ours. See below. And let me take this opportunity to claim that HOLODAD will be the 1st Feature Length Movie shot on the Canon T2I. I looked around the forums and couldn't find anyone who is doing a feature with the camera. If we are not the first, please let me know.

  1. Hi there, my name is Jason and I start shooting my indy horror film The Cthulhu Key: Legacy (www.thecthulhukey.com/blog) the first week in June.

I am looking forward to seeing a ton of new DSLR projects take off this year, and I am certainly looking forward to Holodad!

  3. Thanks Jason! Best of luck on your film. I suspected I wasn't the only one shooting a film with the T2I this summer. Guess I need to change the title of this entry.

  4. Good thinking not waiting on the scarlet. Production technology wont tell your story to the audience no need to wait. You could shoot this on miniDV and if its good people will watch it. Besides I will be trying to buy us a scarlet for work in 2012 assuming there are 100 other bad ass cameras by then that will get us metadata

  5. @troy Absolutely right. Can't wait forever. As much as I wanted to shoot this on the Scarlet, there were too many factors that led me to the decision I made, and I don't have any regrets.

  6. Luke, we are really loving the footage we're getting right now with the Canon T2i. Some weirdness with sharp camera movements (rolling shutter) and seeing rolling banding with lights that cycle funny - a neon light and a couple florescent lights with likely bad ballasts, but the low-light is incredible and those lenses are amazing. The footage is just so damned pretty!

  7. Glad to hear it Jonanthan! Magnetic ballasts are notorious for causing problems, bad or not. What shutter speed were you shooting at when you noticed the rolling banding?

  8. Commented this on a forum I know you were on, but don't know if you are going to keep checking the thread.

I am also shooting a feature this summer on the T2i. Exciting! I think it's a great camera, and you're right about how great the price is. Also, the feature will be shot solely on the T2i- no other cameras. The movie will be shot mostly Day-for-Night, so I'll be excited to share the footage.

The movie's called 'The Darklings' and the website is http://www.darklingsmovie.com .

Good luck to Holodad and to The Cthulu Key! Can't wait to see the results!

  9. Thanks Luke. Whole thing day for night? I'm actually a big fan of day for night if its done right. I checked out the website, best of luck on the production! Comic book too, very cool.

  10. Thanks! Yeah, well, let me qualify that statement. MOSTLY day-for-night. And maybe more accurate would be 'Day-for-twilight'. The movie takes place in a land that is shrouded in an ethereal-looking darkness, so it's not that we're not trying to fool anyone into thinking it's actually night, but I think you will be impressed with the quality of the effect all the same. I hope so, anyway!

Thanks for the luck and the well-wishes! Back atcha!
